Effective February 27, 2012, any commercial vehicle driver who drives 3 or more hours beyond the legal driving, hours of service rule, is subject to face a maximum penalty of $2,750.00. Any Motor Carrier allowing their drivers to drive over the legal drive time, will be subject to face a maximum penalty of $11,000. These figures may be familiar as they are the same penalty cost for driving while using a cell phone. FMCSA is classifying this hours of service violation penalty as "Egregious", or very bad.
